The Great Ocean Road is a 243km stretch between Melbourne and Adelaide. It is as beautiful as it is full of tourists. You might want to avoid high season because then buses really arrive the ones after the others (and in plural...). It is where the very famous 'Twelve Apostles' are. If you go a bit out of the main roads, you can still find some very nice walking paths, old cemeteries, dirt roads with koalas and so on. But even the touristic places are great as long you accept to have foreigners on your selfie.

It is possible to sleep with a car or with a tent on the Great Ocean Road, although not allowed so you might be waken up in the middle of the night. If you have a car, you can always say that you were too tired to continue driving and that is was too dangerous, police will mostly be convinced with this argument. But anyway try to hide and to go on secondary roads, it is too touristy so that the police don't check regularly ;) Spontaneous hospitality might be a good bet as well.

Hitchhiking is very easy on this road.
