Contemporary use of Kurdistan refers to large parts of eastern Turkey (Turkish Kurdistan), northern Iraq (Iraqi Kurdistan), northwestern Iran (Iranian Kurdistan) and northeastern Syria (Syrian Kurdistan) inhabited mainly by Kurds. Among those four countries, only two recognize officialy a region as Kurdistan : Iraq with the Iraqi Kurdistan, and Iran with the Kurdistan province. Some Kurdish nationalist organizations seek to create an independent nation state of Kurdistan.

Some cities in Kurdistan : Kermanshah, Erbil, Mahabad, Doğubeyazıt, Diyarbakır.
