Réunion

Réunion is an island situated in the Indian Ocean. It is directly administrated by the French government, and as such, is a part of the European Union, but not of the Schengen space. Therefore, citizens of certain countries should check whether they need a visa in ahead.

This makes the island a super expensive place, specially when compared to all countries around. But you might not have to spend a coin! Although there is barely no nomad-hitchhiker-backpacker in the island, Reunion is a hobo's paradise. Hitchhiking, dumpster diving, fruit harvesting, busking and wild camping are a marvel here.

Temperature ranges from 20 °C in winter to 35 °C in summer (sea level). Rain season is in summer. And it comes rather suddenly, rains hard and stops quickly. Don't walk away from a shelter in summer.

The east side of the island is rainier than the west side (that is very dry).

Transport

Find info on hitchhiking at Hitchwiki.
  • The road system is developed on a European standard. There is even one highway. (St. Benoit->St. Denis->St. Pierre)
  • There are no trains yet. The backup solution is called "car jaune" (yellow coach). A quite inefficient coach system. They're all yellow, easy to spot.
  • The ring road: One road goes all the way around the island. It is an expressway from St Benoit (East) northward to St Denis (north) and then to St Paul (West), St Leu (West) and St Pierre (South-West). This road is always easily accessible from the various city centers using the appropriate bus network or sometimes just walking. You can hitch on the access roads or roundabouts, and sometimes, even on the highway itself.
  • The highlands: The island has the shape of a cone. From the ring road, you can catch smaller roads uphill that take you in the highlands. Those are overly easy to hitchhike, since they are rather slow. Be careful, it rains easily in the highlands, on the east side in particular.

Accommodation

Find info on hosp ex at Couchwiki.

There is a huge deal of potential hosts on Couchsurfing (not yet on BeWelcome or Trustroots) - but there is a even bigger deal of great places where you can wild camp with no trouble at all, from the seaside to the mountains.

Food

Find info on dumpster diving at Trashwiki.

The island is an abundant and threatened paradise, rich in fruits, vegetables, herbs... Best places for finding food are street markets (marches forains), which happen weekly all over the island. If you show up from 12h, you can recycle loads of nice local food which would otherwise be thrown away. Check when and where street markets take place: http://www.flanerbouger.fr/jour-marche/974-jour-marche-la-reunion.php

Some bakeries will give you leftovers, mostly baguettes, if you ask for it at closing time.

Busking

Reunion is an incredible place for busking. Both reunionais and tourists love it, and there are very few street performers. Best places are street markets (marches forains), where people walk around relaxed and with their wallets at hand, and where vendors wil also be delighted with some entertainment. You could make a fortune touring around the island following street markets.
